What Does “Wellness” Really Mean to You?

I’m a firm believer that being informed is best. Most people have opinions about what it means to “be well” and most people will agree that it best serves if opinions are informed.  There are some harsh truths to face these days, so being informed isn’t always easy.  However once we become mindful, being informed actually enriches our lives. Information is power.

In addition to hydraulic fracking, and industrial and nuclear toxins generated within the US, we’re also affected by China’s record breaking smog and Japan’s ongoing Fukushima Daiichi disaster (the largest industrial and nuclear accident in history). All of this and more are affecting our food, water and health like no previous time in history.  Even organic food grown in the US is vulnerable to environmental toxins, just like food imported from other parts of the world. Organic is still best, but we need to take more precautions for true wellness.  Wellness today is not what it was for our grandparents or even our parents, so it helps to be as informed as possible, especially when it comes to protecting children.

It’s nearly impossible to find food or water that is clean and pure.  There is definitely more than meets the eye even at farmers markets these days. The good news is that we can take steps to strengthen our immune systems and this website can help.  Please read on.

yumThe US-based Environmental Working Group has a popular ‘Dirty Dozen’ guide which lists the fruits and vegetables most impacted by fertilizers by comparison to organics.  However the list does not take into account toxins from pollution and man-made radiation which are threats currently not being addressed in conventional or organic food:

A 2004 study by the EWG identified 287 industrial chemicals in babies’ umbilical-cord blood, including 180 known to cause cancer and 217 that are toxic to the brain and nervous system.  In addition,  consider the man-made radiation and other harmful toxins that travel via the atmosphere and jetstream from Japan and China and there there are even further risks involved.  Organic is still the best, but now more than it’s necessary to detoxify even with an organic diet.

Why no talk about pollution’s effect on food? As you will see, it isn’t enough to use the EWG’s guide or eat organic. Most of us by now have heard about the  Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe but are only beginning to understand the magnitude of the ongoing disaster.  It all started with the Great Northern Japan earthquake and tsunamis on March 11, 2011, The earthquake was just the beginning. It led to cataclysmic explosions and meltdowns of three nuclear reactors at Fukushima. Entire villages and towns were literally wiped off the map and washed out to sea by the tsunamis. Little did people in Hawaii or on the West Coast of the US know that nearly three years later the same wreckage would begin to wash up on the shores of the US,  some of it toxic and radioactive. North America is also downwind of China, where record breaking smog is affecting agricultural land in California and elsewhere.

Who is protecting our food?

Safe food standards aren’t handed out on a silver platter ~ wouldn’t it be nice if they were? The process of creating and maintaining true organic standards is a slippery uphill battle which is ongoing.  Due to an avid interest in not only holistic nutrition but also environmental and natural health,  I’ve learned that it isn’t enough to shop for healthy food, indeed our food standards need careful and vigilant regulation.  It’s not easy but it’s completely necessary. With radiation concerns in mind I authored a 100 page book,  “Silence Deafening, Fukushima Fallout..A Mother’s Response”.  It’s a tool to help people better understand the risks of nuclear accidents and man made radiation in our environment and how everyone can act now to protect ourselves and our families (read more).
